Inspiration

Otos Health wanted to empower people with personalised insights into their hearing. During the ITP Summer programme, our brief was to design an app that not only delivered test results but also kept users motivated to take care of their hearing. We were inspired by storytelling techniques and the idea of guiding users on a hero’s journey, turning a clinical report into a narrative of growth.

Our team — Aili Campbell, Juho Karkinen, Noora Ferm and I — set out to make intangible auditory data relatable. We believed that combining clear visuals, personalised recommendations and educational content could transform how people perceive their hearing health.

Highlights

Problem

Hearing tests can be intimidating and results are often hard to interpret. Many users complete a test but then drop off, unsure of what to do next. Otos wanted to reduce this leaky pipeline and ensure that people stayed engaged and acted on their results.

  • Lack of motivation after completing a hearing test
  • Results hard to interpret for non‑experts
  • High drop‑off after initial test (leaky pipeline)
  • Need to make intangible data feel personal and actionable

Solution

OmaOtos guides users through a hero’s journey. Test results are presented as stages in an adventure, with clear graphics and explanations. Educational modules appear at key moments to sustain motivation and encourage healthy habits.

  • Translate complex hearing data into simple, personalised insights
  • Introduce a narrative structure that rewards progress
  • Provide educational tips and exercises at appropriate points
  • Offer next‑step recommendations to keep users engaged

My process & contribution

Research & discovery

  • Conducted interviews with hearing test users and audiologists
  • Mapped the user journey and identified drop‑off points
  • Benchmarked health and wellness apps for best practices

Concept & narrative

  • Developed the hero’s journey framework to structure results
  • Designed personalised result screens and progress indicators
  • Collaborated on educational content and timing

Prototype & testing

  • Built interactive prototypes in Figma
  • Conducted user tests with target audiences
  • Iterated on flows based on feedback

Impact & lessons

  • 100% of testers better explained their hearing results
  • Sustained engagement through narrative rather than statistics
  • Learned to design for motivation and not just information

What I learned

OmaOtos reinforced the importance of storytelling in health. Turning data into a journey kept users engaged and helped them internalise recommendations. Working closely with audiologists taught me the value of bridging expert knowledge with everyday language.

Project status

The prototype and design guidelines were handed off to Otos Health for further development.
